Based on the current North American theatrical calendar, these are the strongest prospects. Dates can still shift, and Canadian distribution may differ slightly from the US schedule.
1. Hope | September 9
The month’s most exciting original film. Na Hong-jin, director of The Wailing and The Chaser, returns with an ambitious Korean science-fiction thriller about an isolated harbour community confronting a mysterious discovery. The cast includes Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender. If you want something cinematic, strange and genuinely unpredictable, this is my first choice.

2. Resident Evil | September 18
This is a complete theatrical reboot directed by Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind Barbarian and Weapons. Rather than continuing the previous movies, it appears designed as a darker survival-horror adaptation closer to the atmosphere of the games. Austin Abrams leads the cast. Cregger’s involvement makes this substantially more promising than another routine franchise restart.

3. Onslaught | September 4
An original action-horror film from Adam Wingard, director of The Guest, You’re Next and the recent Godzilla vs. Kong films. Adria Arjona plays a mother forced to protect her family from a violent, escalating threat. This looks like September’s best option for aggressive, large-screen genre entertainment.

4. Primetime | September 25
Robert Pattinson plays To Catch a Predator host Chris Hansen in a thriller inspired by the television sting operations of the 2000s. The unusual subject, Pattinson’s casting and its selection for the 2026 Venice competition make it one of the month’s most intriguing prestige releases.

5. Heart of the Beast | September 25
Brad Pitt stars as a former Navy SEAL stranded in the Alaskan wilderness with his retired combat dog after a catastrophic accident. Directed by David Ayer, it looks like an old-fashioned survival adventure built around landscape, physical danger and the relationship between the man and his dog. Probably the month’s most straightforward big-screen crowd-pleaser.

6. The Weight | September 18
A 1930s-set crime thriller starring Ethan Hawke as a prisoner sent to a brutal work camp and drawn into a dangerous gold-smuggling scheme. The trailer suggests a grim, tactile period production rather than glossy studio action. It is a smaller release, but potentially one of September’s better adult dramas.

7. Practical Magic 2 | September 11
Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman return as the Owens sisters almost three decades after the original supernatural romance. It is primarily a nostalgia proposition, but the returning leads and autumnal witchcraft atmosphere make it a natural September cinema release. This is the choice for something romantic, comfortable and less brutal than nearly everything above.

8. Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom | September 18
The safest family recommendation. Aardman returns to Mossy Bottom for another stop-motion feature, this time incorporating playful monster-movie elements. Aardman’s craftsmanship alone makes this more interesting than the average animated franchise sequel.

The current September release calendar was updated on August 11, 2026. For Leo specifically, I’d prioritize Hope, Resident Evil, Onslaught and Primetime. Those four look the most visually ambitious and least like disposable streaming content.
